Buzzing to be sharing my thoughts on this OUTSTANDING novel, The Treatment, by Sarah Moorhead.
Before I share my thoughts, here’s what the official blurb says:
The future of law enforcement has arrived, courtesy of private health contractor Janus Justice. Their ground-breaking ‘Offender Treatment Programme’ has been hailed as the most effective way of tackling crime yet. As offenders move through the four-tiered system, their needs are dealt with, each tier more drastic in its Tier One : Low-risk crimes. Physical therapy encouraged Tier Two : Trauma and addiction. Emotional and psychological reasons for offending are examined Tier Three : Aversion therapy & moral punishment Tier Four : Siberia, where all hope is lost But Grace Gunnarsson , one of Janus’ most highly regarded rehabilitation psychiatrists, has uncovered a terrible flaw in the one that is allowing people to get away with murder…

My thoughts:
OMG Sarah Moorhead what did you just create! This book absolutely BLEW my mind! My head was like a washing machine full of moral dilemmas on a fast spin reading this!
Offender treatment and management is an area I am fascinated by, I have so many thoughts on our current justice system and this made the perfect book for contemplating the predicaments we face when considering how we deal with offenders and what punishment is just and right for crimes committed.
Grace is a psychiatrist specialising in rehabilitation and she works for Janus Justice who operate 4 tiers of justice for offenders. I really liked the concept of rehabilitation and reformation in Tiers 1 and 2 and there were some solid foundations for solutions in there for our current overcrowding situation in prisons.
But once we reach Tiers 3 and 4, well that’s where the ethics and morals come in and when Grace is moved to Tier 3 she really struggles with the treatment and the justice that is meted out. I’m not going to lie when I say I can think of a few people, who definitely deserve to be in those tiers. But once you get to that level, it does really make you think and this was expertly done through the point of view of Grace.
When a group of protestors, unhappy at the punishments meted out, decide to carry out their own form of justice, Grace finds herself caught up in a situation that threatens not only her own life and sanity but those also those she loves and has loved in the past. Grace’s past is a huge motivator for where she is now and as those layers of who she is were peeled away, it really made her character stand out.
This story really drew out all the emotions for me, I was completely engrossed and lost within the pages and didn’t want to put it down, nor did I want it to end.
This book is simply phenomenal and I’d urge everyone to buy a copy now and read it!
